SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Adopt Resolution for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week November 10-16, 2008 (Career and Technical Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval to adopt the resolution for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week. The state of Florida has designated the week of November 10-16, 2008, as Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week recognizing the need for prevention of spinal cord injuries. A state resolution sponsored by Senator Nan Rich and Representative Rene Garcia was passed by the Florida Legislature earlier this year designating this particular week for the campaign.

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, a 501c.3 organization with a goal to prevent and ultimately cure spinal cord injuries with special emphasis on educational programs targeting high school students, is spearheading the 3rd Annual Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week. Schools participating are Alonso, Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon, Gaither, Middleton, Tampa Bay Technical and Wharton High Schools. These schools were selected based on the current program offerings in health science and driver education.

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week will increase awareness of the causes of spinal cord injury and reduce the number of individuals that are paralyzed each year in Florida.
