SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Proposal for a Partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools and Hillsborough Community College to Establish the Hillsborough Community College-Lennard Collegiate Academy (HCC-LCA). (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The HCC-LCA is a two-track program that will prepare students for college entrance tests and collegiate studies. The purpose of the Collegiate Academy is to enable selected Lennard High School students to complete a substantial portion of their lower division collegiate studies before graduating from high school. Students who take full advantage of the Collegiate Academy may be able to complete up to one year of college credits at Hillsborough Community College and save approximately $4,000 in college tuition and textbooks.

HCC-LCA Track One is designed for students who demonstrate collegiate potential but will need academic support in preparing for placement testing and college classes.

HCC-LCA Track Two is designed for talented students who require little or no academic support in preparing collegiate studies.

Students who complete the HCC-LCA program will have achieved the following:

  • Completed all high school requirements for graduation (4 years);
  • Tested into college level courses in mathematics, writing and reading;
  • Earned 30 credits that are transferable to any public college or university in Florida;
  • Completed the first full year of their college degree.
  • ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

    * Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum

    FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: No)

    No financial impact.

    EVALUATION

    An annual review will be conducted by the School District and HCC to determine the program’s effectiveness in increasing access and increasing the number of college credits earned by Lennard students. Florida DOE will also evaluate the use of the PSAT as an acceptable substitute for the Common Placement Test (CPT.) The use of the PSAT has been approved for this project only; if successful, its expanded use could benefit many students.
