Approval of Agreement for Technical Services with Prevention Initiatives to Coordinate Physical Activities for the University of South Florida Childhood Obesity Prevention Project (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval of the Agreement for Technical Services with Prevention Initiatives to coordinate physical activities for the University of South Florida Childhood Obesity Prevention Project. The consultant, Susan Carrigan, will be the liaison between the University of South Florida College of Public Health and the College of Physical Education and Exercise Science to coordinate physical activity opportunities for students in the community during after school hours. The consultant will work jointly with university personnel to recruit and convene community advisory boards comprised of business partners in Robles, Witter, Sulphur Springs, and Oak Park Elementary School communities. She will work directly with school site coordinators to maintain the scope of the project without affecting the students’ instructional day. Approximately 1,300 students in grades 3 through 5 from the partnering schools will participate in this project. Services will be provided for a period of 20 hours per week for 22 weeks beginning January 29, 2009, and ending June 3, 2009.

In addition, the consultant will provide but not be limited to the following:

  • Work cooperatively with District Supervisor for K-12 Physical Education and Health Education to maintain the scope of the project
  • Develop, implement, and assess tailored score cards for the promotion of physical activity among students in the targeted areas
  • Provide deliverables to the University of South Florida and to Hillsborough County Public Schools
