Approve Agreement for Technical Services for Gail Kahlert for Activities Associated with the Safe Routes to School Grant Program (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is a federal program, administered through each state, to enable and encourage children in grades K-8 to walk and cycle to school; to make walking and cycling to school safer and more appealing; and to facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects that will improve safety. The program also addresses the safety needs of children already walking or cycling to school. Schools targeted in this project are Mabry Elementary School and Coleman Middle School. A comprehensive safety training package will be developed for each school, a barcode system will be utilized to collect student data, and student incentives will be provided. Partners in the project include the schools’ PTSAs, the District Safety Office, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. A District Program Manager will manage all grant activities.

Gail Kahlert is allocated as a site-based Trainer/Coordinator, who will provide teacher training, resources for student training, coordinate special events, work with the community and liaison with the District Program Manager to build the incentives program.
