Recognition of 2008/2009 Regional Science Bowl Winners - Durant High School (Secondary Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Regional Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science. Middle and high school students are quizzed in a fast paced question and answer format similar to the game Jeopardy. The Regional Science Bowl now involves more than 13,000 middle and high school students who participate in teams of four to five players at regional competitions across the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Science Bowl team members of Durant High School won a regional competition of the National Science Bowl held in February at the Florida International University in Miami. The team won in a double-elimination tournament in which they defeated four-time defending regional champions and three-time top five national finalist Miami-Palmetto High School. By winning the regional competition, the Durant team is the first from Hillsborough County to participate in the National Science Bowl, which will be held in Washington, D.C., April 30-May 5, 2009.
