SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Termination of Contract With Metropolitan Ministries in Order to Establish a Partnership School (Non-Traditional Programs - Division of Administration)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On June 12, 2007, the Hillsborough County School Board approved a seven-year contract with Metropolitan Ministries Academy. The contract commenced on July 1, 2007, and will end on June 30, 2014. The school has been in operation since July 1, 1998.

The Metropolitan Ministries Academy Board met on June 3, 2009, to discuss student achievement and the educational interests of the students attending the school. The board voted unanimously to commence collaborative negotiations with the Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools to take over operation of the charter school. A letter requesting this is attached. (Attachment 1)

In order for the students to remain at their current school, the district will work in partnership with the charter school to smoothly transition the school from charter status to traditional status. This will include but not be limited to: hiring staff, reviewing available resources, ordering materials, reviewing financial records, and entering into a contract with Metropolitan Ministries.

The district priority will be to raise student achievement by utilizing test data from the 2008/2009 school year and aligning instruction to meet the needs of the students.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

* Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates, * Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods, * Motivate students to become responsible learners, * Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum

Metropolitan Ministries Academy received approximately $426,073 through the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP) funding for the 2008/2009 school year to date.
