Recognition of 2009 Governor’s Fitness Challenge Award Recipient-Dowdell Middle Magnet School (Middle School Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Dowdell Middle Magnet School was one of only eight middle schools in the state of Florida to be awarded the 2009 Governor's Fitness Challenge Award. The Governor’s Council was established to develop a state plan of action to increase physical fitness through regular exercise and sound nutrition practices among Floridians of all ages and to reduce the rate of obesity and resulting chronic diseases. The eight-week school based program helped boost student participation in physical education fitness activities.

On August 20, 2009, Governor Charlie Crist presented Robert Lawson, Principal, and Pamela Scott, Physical Education Teacher, the Governor's Fitness Challenge Award recipient flag and a check for $2,500. As award winners, every Dowdell student will receive a Governor's Fitness Challenge tee-shirt as an acknowledgement of their exemplary performance in the physical fitness event. The $2,500 will go toward the purchase of equipment for the school’s physical education program.
