Recognition of the 2009/2010 Elementary Science Olympics Finalist Winners (Elementary Education - Curriculum and Instruction)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Elementary Science Olympics was established to strengthen student motivation and interest in science and promote community awareness of science. The event is organized and hosted with the partnership of the Elementary Science Department, the Hillsborough Association of Elementary Science Teachers (HAEST) and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade work either individually or cooperatively with a partner to create a solution to a given scenario in various events such as; Kindergarten Skyscrapers, First Grade Bubbles, Second Grade Airplanes, Third Grade Aqua Foil Boats, Fourth Grade Marshmallow Flyers, and Fifth Grade Marble Coasters.

This year, 122 elementary schools participated in the event at two different weekend competitions. Over 3,800 supporters of Science Olympics included parents, extended family members, teachers, administrators and district staff attended the event. The cooperative teamwork, problem solving and creativity evidenced by participating students was incredible. Finalists from both weekend competitions met for a Science Olympics Finals at MOSI on December 3, 2009.

Attached is a list of the 2009/2010 Gold, Silver, and Bronze Science Olympics Finalist Winners.
