Recognition of the Innovative “Academy of Health Administration” at Tampa Bay Technical High School (Career and Technical Education - Curriculum and Instruction)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Initiative: The Academy of Health Administration is a 4-year program in Business Technology Education that began operations at Tampa Bay Technical High School in August 2008. This program prepares students for future leadership positions by providing them with both a strong foundation of business concepts and specific insight into the healthcare industry. Each cohort of students takes two Academy classes per year, which integrate the Academy of Health Administration’s unique theme into the Business Supervision and Management curriculum.

Goals:

Targeted Population: The targeted group for this program is students with an interest in both entrepreneurial and health-related fields. The Academy of Health Administration has a total of 60 students, including 24 freshman, 17 sophomores and 19 juniors. The first graduating class from this Academy will be in June 2011.

Timeline: The conception and planning for the Academy of Health Administration program began in 2007, when this program was included as part of the CHOICE Grant. With its centralized location and Magnet selection process, Tampa Bay Technical High School was quickly identified as the ideal site for building this program. In spring 2008, school administrators, teachers, and district personnel collaborated to design and develop the program’s structure and curriculum. The first group of students began taking courses in the program in fall 2008.
