EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request the School Board adopt the attached proclamation designating the month of February 2010 as “Career and Technical Education Month” in Hillsborough County Public Schools.

The National Association for Career and Technical Education, the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education, and the Hillsborough Technical, Career, and Adult Association have designated the month of February 2010 as Career and Technical Education Month. Attached is Governor Charlie Crist’s proclamation recognizing the state of Florida’s observance of Career and Technical Education month for February 2010. The theme for this year’s recognition is “CTE: Invest in Your Future.”

Career and Technical Education (CTE) serves as the foundation of a strong, continuously educated workforce and contributes to America’s leadership in an ever changing international marketplace. CTE programs and academies are exemplary and provide graduates the skills to pursue all levels of postsecondary education. In addition, our workforce development programs for adults provide opportunities for updating skills, pursuing advanced career opportunities, and continuing education. The quality of Hillsborough County Career and Technical Education’s services and programs attracts many new industries to the Tampa Bay area which enriches our local economy.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is an essential component of preparing our workforce to be globally competitive. CTE prepares all students for a multitude of high skill, high wage careers requiring college and postsecondary training programs. CTE ensures students become successful contributors to our nation’s marketplace and greater community. In addition, CTE students graduate with industry recognized certifications, articulated college credits, opportunities for many scholarships, and well honed leadership skills. During this Career and Technical Education month CTE educators, district staff members, and students will be involved in various career awareness activities which include job fairs, media promotions, proclamations, and open house events. All events will highlight the various career pathways available to students in Hillsborough County Public Schools through the Career and Technical Education Department.

We invite all interested individuals to visit Career and Technical programs and academies.
