TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
The Urban Garden and Farming Project at Temple Terrace Elementary School - A Bank Street Academy (Administration Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  Temple Terrace Elementary School - A Bank Street Academy broke ground on their Urban Garden on February 6, 2010, when they installed an irrigation system and planting boxes.  Every kindergarten through fifth grade class planted a variety of fruits and vegetables in mini greenhouses that were transplanted into the garden in March.

Goals:

  • To produce an abundance of food for people in need by planting a garden on unused land and space while increasing diversity, educating youth, and providing an environmentally sustainable system to uplift the Temple Terrace community
  • To enhance science experiences for students by making science more accessible, culturally relevant, and empowering
  • To expose students to community-based service learning projects that relate to the Bank Street curriculum

Targeted Population:  All students in grades K-5 are involved in the Urban Garden and Farming Project, as well as the entire faculty and staff of Temple Terrace Elementary School.

Timeline:  The Bank Street Academy is in its third year of implementation and is a schoolwide initiative.  The Urban Garden began in February 2010 and is in its second year of implementation.  It continues to grow and develop and it is an ongoing learning project with no anticipated termination date.

 Continued on attachment.
