Approve the Adoption of Recommended Titles as County Adopted Instructional Materials for Middle School Science, Secondary Science, and Criminal Justice and Emergency Medical Responder (Middle School Education, Secondary Education and Career and Technical Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Approval is requested to adopt the instructional materials listed on the attached memorandums from Pamela Caffery, Supervisor, Middle School Science; Larry Plank, Supervisor, Secondary Science; Cosette Whitmore, R.N., Ph.D., Supervisor, Health Science and Public Service Education; and Andrea Beverly, R.N., M.Ed., District Resource Teacher, Health Science and Public Service Education. Instructional Materials Selection Committees evaluated and recommended the materials in accordance with Board Policies 2510 and 2520 and administrative procedures that include the following:

  • The selection committee follows the format, composition and criteria established by or compatible with those established by State Selection Committees.
  • The selection committee is trained in the instructional materials evaluation process. 
  • The selection committee reviews and evaluates submissions using the Florida Department of Education instructional materials evaluation form or an equivalent district evaluation form.
  • The selection committee through consensus recommends instructional materials for adoption.  Recommended titles of major tools of instruction are placed on a ballot for teacher vote.  Sample sets of the materials are distributed to schools for teachers to review before voting.

Titles may be purchased with categorical textbook funds in the general operating budget for Curriculum and Instruction. The estimated costs are $600,000 (Middle), $1,650,000 (Secondary) and $8,200 (Career and Technical) for a total of $2,258,200.
