SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Subagreement (#1225-1083-00-B) Between the University of South Florida (USF) and Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) for Services Associated with HCPS Role in USF's Federal National Science Foundation Geosciences Grant Program, Climate Change Education Partnership Program: Coastal Area Climate Change Education (CACCE) (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) awarded $479,254 to USF for a National Science Foundation Geosciences Grant.  Of that amount, $10,000 is dedicated to project services rendered by HCPS Supervisor of Secondary Science.  This project will focus on the impacts of climate change in coastal areas, with sea level change as a core theme.  The audience targeted by this project includes higher education and K-12 faculty, informal science educators, and college and K-12 students across the region, working toward ultimately reaching the broader community. The specific goals include:

  1. Preparation of a new generation of climate scientists, engineers, and technicians; 
  2. Preparation of our region's citizens to understand global climate change and its real time manifestations, and how to mitigate its impact; 
  3. Production of new knowledge about climate change, about preparing students to work on climate-related problems, and about means for effectively engaging the broader community in understanding the issue.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum • Recruit, develop, and retain a highly effective, diverse workforce
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  No)
Funding for this project is provided by the USDOE.  USF is the grant's fiscal agent and project funds reside at USF.  HCPS will invoice USF as outlined in the Subagreement.
EVALUATION
Under the terms of the grant, USF is responsible for project evaluation.  A copy of the annual report and final evaluation report will be provided to HCPS Office of Assessment and Accountability. The anticipated date for the first annual report is December 30, 2011.
