SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Submissions for the Florida School Boards Association 2012 Legislative Platform Items (Government Relations)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Each year the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) requests input from school boards throughout the state regarding possible legislative priorities for inclusion into the FSBA Legislative Platform.  Based on Board input and staff recommendations, draft priorities are developed for Board approval.

  1. Uphold the Provision of Article IX, Section 1 of the Florida Constitution by establishing additional funding sources for public education.
  2. Modify Florida Statute 1001.42(4)(f) - Powers and Duties of District School Board - to return the non-restricted authority of setting the opening and closing dates of schools to school boards.
  3. Return constitutional authority to School Boards by amending law so that the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) shall not enroll students without the approval of and oversight by school districts.
  4. Create a mechanism in law for school districts to request from the Governor or Commissioner waivers to laws or regulations.
  5. Amend Florida Statute 1001.371 - Organization of District School Board.  Amend current law to allow for flexibility of the mandated organizational date.  This will allow for changes when such date conflicts with Thanksgiving break for districts that close during that week in November.
