Approve Purchase of IBM z114 Model Mainframe and Authorize Associated Contract Attachments for Software Licensing with International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation (Information and Technology Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
This agenda item approves the purchase of a replacement to the district's existing IBM z9 Business Class mainframe computer that is utilized to operate the Student Information System, Lawson ERP database, and Data Warehouse. The existing mainframe computer was purchased for $1,342,500 in November 2006, and the model is no longer upgradable by the manufacturer. Additional capacity is needed to meet the current demands and permit future expansion.
On July 12, 2011, IBM announced a new model z114. The cost of the new model is $1,297,164. The IBM migration/trade-in offerings reduce the purchase price by $745,930 to $551,234. In addition, the State of Florida contract 10% discount and an additional HCPS 15% discount further reduce the purchase price to $421,241. Executive Summary continued on Attachment A. |

All Strategic Objectives
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)
The cost of the new model is offset by the reduction in software and maintenance costs currently being spent on the existing mainframe. The hardware purchase price of $421,241 for the IBM zEnterprise z114 mainframe will be funded from the E-Rate project and the Information Services Department budget.
If approved, the hardware will be procured using the piggyback to the State of Florida Agreement #252-500-09-1 Mainframe and Other Software that the Board approved on July 26, 2011. The monthly software license charge is expected to reduce from an estimated $58,000 to $52,000 per month. The software license charge will continue to be funded from the Information Services Department budget. |
|
EVALUATION | |
IBM software/hardware is reviewed annually to confirm that it provides the functionality required to meet the district goals and objectives in a cost effective manner.
