SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Agreement for Technical Services with New Teacher Center to Support the Development and Enhancement of the Teacher and Principal Induction Programs (Information and Technology Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
Teacher effectiveness is recognized as the most important school-based determinant of a student's success. Principal leadership is second to only classroom instruction as an influence on student learning. Consequently, one of the major initiatives under the Empowering Effective Teachers Grant and Wallace Foundation Grant is a comprehensive induction model for new teachers and administrators.
Research has shown that comprehensive mentoring improves teacher retention and reduces district recruitment costs. All classroom teachers with no prior teaching experience receive weekly assistance from a full release mentor and second year teachers receive biweekly assistance. The mentor provides support to the teacher in areas including, but not limited to, lesson planning, classroom management, content, instructional strategies, assessment, parent communication, and recordkeeping.
