Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Black Girl Speaks to Provide Workshops at Blake and Middleton High Schools (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Black Girl Speaks (BGS) will provide workshops for approximately 200  female students of all races, in grades 9 - 12 at Blake and Middleton High Schools.  The focus of this program is to improve student morale, increase student participation in the classroom, and improve social and academic behaviors within the female student population.  The students will have workshops on creative writing, self-awareness, relationship building, oral communication in reading, writing, and high order thinking skills, to mention a few.

Students in grades 9-12 during the 2011/2012 school year will be tutored and monitored for eight weeks, one hour per day, during the summer of 2012.  This group encompasses 25 students from Blake and Middleton High Schools.

The BGS curriculum expands vocabulary, increases self-esteem, self-awareness, and writing effectiveness.  Workshops and lectures provide a distinctive experience enhancing creative writing and reading skills.  Comprehension and conflict resolution techniques will also be taught.  Participants are engaged in thought-provoking discussions that encourage girls to express themselves through the power of word, rather than violence or other destructive means. The workshops are tailored to meet the specific needs of the audience.   Students who exemplify excellent writing skills will participate in "Write Out Loud!" a teen poetry slam competition held annually.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
The cost of this agreement is $35,000, and will be paid using Title I funds.
EVALUATION
A survey was disseminated to the students, teachers, and guidance counselors.  The survey analyzes the student's social and academic behaviors prior to and after the participation in the program. Further assessment of the students improvement in their grade point average and attendance, and a decrease in disciplinary referrals were be measured.

Data reflecting the results of the survey are attached for the 2010/2011 school year.
