TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Probeware and Data Collection Devices, Technology Based Instruction (Secondary Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  Hillsborough County Public Schools is engaged in an ongoing effort to integrate dynamic technology-based instruction into science classrooms using probes and data collection devices that drive student inquiry and exploration. As the implementation matures, more teachers are receiving training and support to put these tools into the hands of reluctant learners.  Data collection tools offer a powerful addition to our curriculum helping teachers to engage their students more effectively and more deeply in science and provide teachers with a ready-made path for harnessing the power of authentic data in instruction.

Seven elementary schools and 19 classrooms received Pasco Spark systems during the 2010/2011 school year.  The 2011/2012 school year saw Lockhart Magnet School implement Pasco Spark in all third, fourth, and fifth grade classes.  Forty-seven middle school teachers have received training and the system is currently in use at 12 middle schools.   All 27 high schools use probes and interface devices.  Many schools inaugurated the use of this technology through the advanced placement classes.  This implementation allowed teachers to conduct complex labs more efficiently and with less preparation time and supply cost.  Probe based labs are being integrated across the high school curricula.

Goals:  Our goal is to increase student achievement in science.

Targeted Population:  All students in third through twelfth grade are targeted.

Timeline: Probeware and data collection devices were implemented in 2010 and are ongoing.

Professional/Staff Development: Teachers attend introductory and follow-up workshops. Mentors are available at each site for continued support in the use of the program.

Transferability:  Students use probes and data collection devices to explore science concepts for deep foundational understanding and develop paths of inquiry using probes to enhance their content knowledge.  Students becoming familiar with the use of probeware in elementary and middle school will find similar systems in place in high school classrooms.

Involvement:  Worked closely with Pasco and Vernier staff to create and support the professional development and classroom implementation plans, and established district trainers and Ideas workspaces so teachers can share lab activities that they developed.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners
