SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Purchase of Materials for the Hillsborough County Elementary Robotics Program for the Extended School Year Program and LEGO Smart Schools Grant 2012/2013 School Year (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Since 2009, LEGO robotics equipment and curriculum have been purchased for 21 of our Title I elementary schools through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Materials have been purchased to build Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) interest in these schools in order to give new opportunities to our Title I students.  Over the past two school years, approximately 1,600 students have had access to robotics curriculum integrated into their science and mathematics lessons.

Through the use of School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds, B.T. Washington, Just, and Miles elementary schools will be implementing an expanded STEM initiative during the extended school year program.  Upon final approval from The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), $100,102 will be utilized to purchase LEGO robotics equipment for all three elementary schools.  This initiative will provide students opportunities to continue STEM activities into middle school and eventually into Middleton Magnet High School Pre-Collegiate Academy for STEM.

Executive Summary continued on attachment.
