Empowering Effective Teachers (EET) 2011-2012 Update
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This workshop is designed to provide an update on teacher observations and professional development.

During the workshop we will:

  1. Review observer training and calibration
  2. Discuss results of observations completed during the year
  3. Illustrate the types of feedback teachers receive from observers
  4. Highlight changes in Professional Development and some of our most important intervention strategies

To date, approximately 50,000 observations have been completed during the 2011-2012 school year.  All observers have received over 50 hours of training and have been calibrated in the field by trainers from Cambridge Education.

A goal of EET is to expand the definition of professional development beyond the traditional thought that professional development happens in a workshop. Professional Development takes many shapes, from post-observation conferences, to Professional Learning Community (PLC) discussions, to simply observing others teach lessons.  In addition to those strategies, we still place an emphasis on delivering high-quality, pertinent workshops.  District teachers have earned about 371,000 hours of inservice credit during this school year alone, much of it directly related to the evaluation process.  Two of our most popular courses this year have been our new trainings on the Danielson Framework and one based on Doug Lemov’s book, Teach Like a Champion.  One of the key pieces of Empowering Effective Teachers is the principle that our evaluation system is developmental in nature and is designed to drive Professional Development. This is illustrated by our focus on Domain 3, Instruction.
