SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Expenditure with the Royal Plaza Hotel for the Race-to-the-Top, Hard-to-Measure Item-writing, and Item Reviewing Conferences for Career-Technical Education and Physical Education/Health Education (Information and Technology Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Through the Race-to-the-Top grant, in 2011-2012, Hillsborough County Public Schools was awarded two additional grants to create and review assessment items in two Hard-to-Measure subject areas.  These grants have been renewed for the 2012-2013 school year.  The items to be created and reviewed are for 20 different courses in Career and Technical Education and 24 different courses in Physical Education/Health Education.  To fulfill the grant’s requirement to include educators from across the state, members of each subject area from Hillsborough County and districts throughout Florida must be invited to participate. The grant requires that project participants are trained prior to creating and reviewing the items to be used in the state-wide item bank.

To fulfill this commitment, over 150 participants from 35 different counties are eligible to participate in the trainings for item writing and item reviewing.  Funds specifically dedicated for this purpose through the Hard-to-Measure grant will be used to pay for rooms, conference rooms, and travel for individuals.  The Royal Plaza Hotel in Orlando, Florida, has been chosen for these trainings as a centrally-located, financially fiscal site for these meetings.  Three trainings will be held from September through October 2012, to accomplish the requirement of the grant.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
The total cost of the conferences is $129,386.  This cost includes rooms for all participants from the chosen districts throughout the state.  The cost also includes all conference rooms used for the trainings.  Funds are allocated in the grant for this specific purpose and no district funds are used other than those provided by the grant.
EVALUATION
The successful training of all participants will be the evaluation of this item.
