EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
From September 22, 2012, through September 28, 2012, a team of ten students with visual impairments participated in the Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SCIVIS) at the NASA Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama. During this week-long camp, the entire Space Camp curriculum was adapted for the needs of learners with visual impairments providing them access to the same science, technology, engineering, and math content as their sighted peers. Students learned about space through a variety of hands-on experiences with flight simulators, space shuttle replicas, weightlessness chairs, space suits, creation of rockets, rocket launches, space station design, and space robotics.
One hundred eighty students from around the world with visual impairments participate in SCIVIS. The “Right Stuff Award” is presented annually to the Space Camper who exemplifies the highest level of leadership, teamwork, and technology skills among all participants. This year, the “Right Stuff Award” recipient was an eighth grade student at Burns Middle School. |
