SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Agreement with the University of South Florida Confucius Institute for the Establishment of the Confucius Classroom for Students Currently Enrolled in Chinese Programs (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In collaboration with the University of South Florida (USF) Confucius Institute and the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Quindao University), the prestigious Confucius Classroom grant will be implemented during the 2013/2014 school year at Ferrell Middle Magnet School, Franklin Middle Magnet School, and Middleton High School.

The Confucius Classroom grant will provide resources for teaching materials, staff development, and cultural activities for students enrolled in current Chinese programs.  In addition, the agreement will offer support from USF and Quindao University of College Board programs by developing partnerships with schools in China leading students to AP® Chinese and an increased level of Chinese language and cultural proficiency.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods • Motivate students to become responsible learners • Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)

Grant funds will be provided by the USF Confucius Institute for an annual start-up operating budget of $10,000 for the Confucius Classroom upon School Board approval.
EVALUATION
The anticipated date of evaluation will be June 2014.
