TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Hillsborough Virtual School (HVS) - Impacting Students in Hillsborough County Public Schools (Virtual Instruction Programs - Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:   HVS is a growing program that serves the needs of a variety of students in Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS).  Our instructors work to meet the needs of students who are enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12.

Goals:   To offer a variety of quality courses to students in Hillsborough County who desire flexible schedules, individualized learning paces, and a virtual instruction platform.  To provide an opportunity for students in Hillsborough County brick and mortar schools to fulfill needs such as the online graduation requirement, acceleration, and gifted instruction.  Also, for HVS to use a blended learning format with alternative education students.  Another goal is to educate the HCPS community and Hillsborough County residents about what virtual learning is and who is best suited to learn online.

Targeted Population:  We serve all students K-12 who want to use virtual curriculum as a full-time school choice; as a home education curricula choice; for gifted students in some elementary schools; for co-enrolled students; for some credit recovery needs; and, with some alternative education students.

Timeline:  HVS began as a franchise of Florida Virtual School in 2002 serving high school students on a part-time basis.

Professional/Staff Development:  All faculty are required to attend face-to-face and online professional development trainings specific to the courses and curriculum providers being used as well as professional development that is required for all HCPS teachers.

Transferability:  The curriculum meets State and Common Core Standards as well as those of College Board for advanced placement courses.

Involvement:  In addition to providing general information to the public at advertised information sessions, working with the Choice Office, regularly communicating updates to students and parents through guidance counselors, our website, and other social media, we constantly work to market ourselves through involvement with our business partners.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates • Motivate students to become responsible learners
