Hillsborough County Public Schools Common Core State Standards Implementation (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
At the November 19, 2013, School Board meeting, the Board requested periodic updates on the Hillsborough County Public Schools implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The CCSS were researched, written, and developed by professional educators and education experts from across the United States, and agreed upon in 2010 through a state led initiative by the National Governor's Association and Council of Chief State School Officers.  Florida's State Board of Education voluntarily adopted the CCSS in 2010, followed by more than 40 states in 2011.  The CCSS provide clear educational standards, while allowing local districts and schools flexibility needed to deliver quality instruction in the classroom.  The standards, which are not to be confused with curriculum or instruction, are designed to ensure all students, regardless of demography, graduate high school and are prepared to enter college or the workforce.  Moreover, the standards are internationally benchmarked and provide our students with an edge in the global jobs market by ensuring mastery of knowledge of skills needed to perform today's high-skill, high-wage occupations.

Hillsborough County Public Schools supports the full implementation of CCSS for the 2014/2015 school year and is focused on providing teachers, administrators, parents, and students the support needed for a successful transition to CCSS.

Attached is an overview of Hillsborough County Public Schools CCSS implementation plan, identifying the targeted audiences, professional development opportunities, curriculum and instructional materials alignment, technology support, and assessment information.  The information provided also highlights many of the questions raised in the Council of Great City Schools Calendar of Questions as well as identifying areas that have not yet been addressed.
