TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION
Hillsborough County Public Schools Out-of-School Time Program (HOST) – Student Enrichment Opportunity to Learn Spanish Incorporating the Sticky Spanish MethodTM (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Initiative:  The Sticky Spanish MethodTM (Sticky Spanish) is developed on solid brain based research.  The Natural Approach Model (Krashen, S.D. & Terrell, T.D.) and the Total Physical Response (TPR) Method (Asher, J. J.) as it relates to the acquisition of a second language.  Sticky teaches Spanish or English by using carefully choreographed dances that incorporate commonly used elements of sign language as a way to connect mind and body.

Goals:  Help students enjoy the process of learning to communicate in a second language.

Targeted Population:  Hillsborough County Public School (HCPS) HOST students in grades kindergarten through second grade.  The brain absorbs and stores different sounds naturally and at an amazing rate during early childhood and elementary levels, hence, the rationale for choosing grades kindergarten through second grade.

Timeline:  Sticky Spanish will initially be used 30 elementary schools (see attached) with the anticipation of expanding to the remaining HOST sites in the future.

Professional/Staff Development:  HOST staff development consists of an initial training with three ongoing “feedback and coaching” sessions scheduled the first week of each consecutive month over a total of three months.

Transferability:  Sticky Spanish is aligned with the National Common Core Standards of Reading, Listening and Speaking, Language and Writing.  Sticky Spanish promotes multiple learning styles: print, verbal, interactive, haptic/hands on, aural/listen and talk, kinesthetic/movement composed of sing along songs with lyrics, focusing on Spanish and English phonics, key words in American sign language, and connects dual language with dance moves with reading and writing practice opportunities available. The Sticky Spanish MethodTM  also has a parent involvement component making a Sticky Spanish audio CD available to play while riding in the car or to play at home as repetition aids with retention.

Involvement:  HOST continues to focus on its Mission:  Provide Out-of-School Time programs that empower students to grow and develop in a safe, caring and educationally enriched environment.  As part of our effort to create a dynamic and relevant learning environment, HOST fully supports “disguised learning” by creating, planning and delivering a variety of activities that support, assist and enhance students academically, physically and culturally.
