SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Recognize the Plant High School Staff for Their Response to a Medical Emergency on Their Campus
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On April 29, a Plant High student collapsed while running on the campus track. The young man’s heart and breathing stopped. What happened over the next crucial minutes likely saved the student’s life and stands as an inspiring example of the value of training and the composure of the Plant High staff.

Plant High staff quickly recognized the gravity of the situation and began performing the emergency interventions as they had been trained to do. They performed CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and used an AED (automated external defibrillator) to keep the student alive until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived on the scene.

After the emergency, Physical Education Teacher Carrie Mahon, Nurse Kayla Spilman, Assistant Principal Laura Figueredo, and School Resource Officer Mark Holloway said they simply did what they were trained to do. However, if not for the immediate, heroic actions of Plant High staff and Tampa Fire Rescue, the student likely would not have survived.
