SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Proposed Attendance Boundary Adjustments to Just and B.T. Washington Elementary Schools and for Madison and Stewart Middle Magnet Schools

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Tampa Housing Authority in conjunction with Banc of America Community Development Corporation and the City of Tampa have been working together to achieve the redevelopment of Central Park Village public housing, into Encore, a mixed income, mixed use community.  The project was the recipient of a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods Grant.  The School District was included in the grant  and may eventually be eligible for funds related to the proposed Meacham Middle School or to improve schools in the area.

The proposed attendance boundary adjustment will reassign the students who will be moving into the Encore project from Just Elementary, that is over capacity, to B.T. Washington Elementary that has available capacity and is also in the immediate neighborhood of the Encore community. A related adjustment at the middle school level is also proposed from Madison Middle located in south Tampa to Stewart Middle Magnet located much closer to the Encore community.  Though a magnet school, Stewart already has a small attendance boundary which this proposal will slightly expand.   All changes impact only the Encore community, currently there are no students residing in the community, though some families will be moving in shortly. Staff has been in close contact with representatives from Tampa Housing Authority to ensure that families considering a move into Encore are aware of the proposed school attendance boundary adjustment.
