Transportation Improvement Plan | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
In 2006, the Superintendent requested a review of the Transportation Department. A consultant was retained and a Transportation Improvement Plan was developed by administration and adopted by the Board in early 2007. The resulting reorganization of the Transportation Department produced more efficiency but many of the recommendations were not able to be accomplished because of the Great Recession which substantially reduced funding coming to the school district. Funds available for maintenance and construction projects and bus purchases were reduced by approximately 77% from available dollars in 2006/2007. In August 2013 the Board determined to contract with School Bus Consultants to guide decisions in bus purchases and other areas of decision making within the Transportation Department. In addition, 27 focus groups were held across the county as well as Board Member town hall meetings to allow all stakeholders in transportation an opportunity to provide input into the improvement plan. After consideration of all of these reports and review of the National School Transportation Specifications and Procedures (2010 revised edition) adopted by the Fifteenth National Congress on School Transportation, eight key areas for improvement were determined: Equipment, Repairs, Facilities, Communication, Training, Specialized Transportation Support, Management and Salary. These eight areas are individually addressed in the plan. |
