Approve the Purchase of Conscious Discipline Materials and Training from Loving Guidance, Inc. (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive social and emotional intelligence classroom management program that empowers both teachers and students. The goal of the program is to provide systematic changes in schools by fostering the emotional intelligence of teachers and children. Approximately 500 teachers were trained on this program during the 2013/2014 school year through districtwide trainings and school-based workshops offered at current pilot elementary schools: Bailey, Broward, Desoto, Edison, Roosevelt, and Summerfield. When combined with the teachers trained in previous years, the program has impacted over 1,000 classrooms. For 2014/2015, we will continue to support the current pilot schools with training and materials for new staff members and offer training for 180 additional teachers districtwide.  Funding will provide a classroom set of materials for each teacher trained, district trainer costs, and ongoing coaching from Loving Guidance, Inc.

Conscious Discipline, Inc. revolves around teachers utilizing seven basic skills of discipline to constructively respond to conflict in the classroom. Using these skills, teachers create a classroom that models the life values needed to enable each student to excel as a responsible citizen. Conscious Discipline leads teachers and schools through a process that promotes permanent behavior changes in both teachers and children.
