Recognition of Howard W. Blake High School of the Arts - National Photography, Art, and Creative Writing Contest Winners and Otto Kraushaar Awards in Music | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
Students won top honors in the National Coastal America Ocean Art Contest; 9-12 grades photography and art divisions. The Best of Show winner will be featured in the North American Ocean Art Travel Exhibit.
Creative writing students won Gold Medals at the National Scholastic Alliance of Arts and Writing Awards. The students were honored at Carnegie Hall for their poetry and prose collections. The band program and its directors earned two Otto Kraushaar Awards given to high school band programs by the Florida Bandmasters Association in recognition of earning a Straight Superior rating in all aspects of their program: Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble. It is an extremely difficult rating to achieve and Blake earned two last year as both the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band earned Straight Superior ratings at the State Music Performance Assessment. Howard W. Blake High School of the Arts became a magnet high school in 1997 and is home to 1,000 arts students in grades 9-12. Students travel from all over Hillsborough County to attend the Blake arts program. |
