TO: | School Board Members |
FROM: | MaryEllen Elia, Superintendent |
SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Renaming District Technical Centers to Technical Colleges
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
We request approval to change the name of Aparicio-Levy, Brewster, Erwin, and Learey Technical Centers to Aparicio-Levy Technical College, Brewster Technical College, Erwin Technical College, and Learey Technical College. This action would not change the governance or operating structure and does not require formal legislative approval. The change from technical centers to technical colleges is authorized by the accrediting commission, The Council on Occupational Education (COE), and has been recently enacted by several Florida public school districts.
The intended outcome of the name change is to increase interest, access, and enrollment by more clearly defining to the general public the postsecondary nature of adult technical education programs offered by school districts. Increased enrollment provides more skilled workers with industry certifications to serve the needs of employers in our community. Additionally, increased enrollment prepares more graduates for a smooth transition from postsecondary career and technical programs to our public state and community colleges. |
