Approve the Job Description for Registered Nurse (School Nurse)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The current job description, Staff Nurse, approved in July 1987, and revised in July 1998 requires the Staff Nurse to only hold a current State of Florida License as a Registered Nurse (RN).  To date a very large number of our students are diagnosed with acute or chronic physical, mental and/or emotional health conditions.  Many communicable and infectious diseases plague our schools, and screenings are mandated for students; vision, BMI, and scoliosis; therefore, we feel it necessary to retire our Staff Nurse position through attrition and implement a Registered Nurse (School Nurse). 

The Registered Nurse (School Nurse) position will require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school.  The Bachelor of Science in Nursing prepares registered nurses to practice in all health care settings, and require the core curriculum and clinical competencies in: community health, school health, and public health nursing with clinical rotations, leadership and case management, health policy, system improvement, and evidence based practice, teamwork and collaboration. The role of registered nurses (school nurses) continues to evolve in order to meet the health needs of the student in the school setting.
