SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Request to the Metropolitan Planning Organization to Add a Hillsborough County School Board Member as a Voting Member
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is an organization created by federal and state law and charged with long-range transportation planning. Florida Statutes section 339.175 provides the criteria for MPO membership and includes agencies that operate or administer a major mode of transportation. The Hillsborough County School Board meets the criteria for membership. The current MPO membership includes Hillsborough County Commissioners, the Mayor of Tampa, Tampa City Council members, representatives from Plant City and Temple Terrace, and representatives of the Port, HART, Expressway Authority, and the Aviation Authority.
The Hillsborough County Attorney's Office, the legal advisor to the MPO, has opined that the MPO, upon request of the School Board, could amend the Interlocal Agreement establishing membership to include a representative from the School Board. The appropriate representative should be one of the seven elected School Board Members. The MPO Policy Committee will consider the School Board's request and make a recommendation to the entire MPO membership. Once that has occurred, the MPO will officially amend its Interlocal Agreement to include a School Board member as a voting member of the MPO. |
