EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
According to the Center for Disease Control, dental caries (tooth decay) is the single most common chronic childhood disease, five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.  Our four community agencies partnered together to provide Head Start, second and third grade elementary students free dental education, dental screenings, dental sealants, and dental referrals at designated Hillsborough County Public Schools.

The Florida Department of Health, Hillsborough County, Tampa Family Health Centers, Suncoast Community Health Centers, Inc., and MORE HEALTH, Inc., entered into an agreement with The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, September 2012, to apply dental sealants and provide dental services to second grade students in eight Title I schools.  In 2013, the number of schools participating in the program doubled to 16.  Currently, 48 Title I elementary schools are participating in the program and are served equitably by Tampa Family Health Centers or Suncoast Community Health Centers, Inc., and MORE HEALTH, Inc.

The Florida Department of Health, Hillsborough County is the lead agency and the coordinator of the dental sealant program.  Agency employees work with an identified “Oral Health Champion” at each school and select dates for administering dental sealant, obtaining parent permission slips and provide sealant information to students.

MORE HEALTH, Inc. schedules and teaches their dental lesson, “Tooth Town, Show Down,” to second grade classes, a lesson promoting the prevention of tooth decay and the benefits of healthy nutrition.  MORE HEALTH, Inc. also sends dental health information letters to parents along with a free toothbrush for each participating student.

Tampa Family Health Centers or Suncoast Community Health Centers, Inc. provide a short sealant presentation to students in partnership with the Florida Department of Health, Hillsborough County.  Partner agency employees return on a scheduled sealant day and provide dental screening and placement of sealants on students who have returned their permission slips.  Students needing additional care are referred to the aforementioned centers for restorative services at no charge to the families.
