EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
Initiative:
The grant team works collaboratively across the three Now Is The Time grants to assist schools in creating positive, nurturing, and safe school environments critical to all students’ success in learning and life. Goals: To improve school-wide culture and climate by increasing the social-emotional well-being of students through the expansion of positive behavior supports, increased mental health awareness, and the provision of targeted interventions. Targeted Population: Students attending the 21 schools identified in PREVENT, 25 schools identified in CLIMATE, and all secondary schools as identified in AWARE (see attached list of schools). Timeline: PREVENT focuses on all 21 sites throughout the five year duration of the grant which spans from October 1, 2014-September 30, 2019. AWARE focuses on 13 schools in the first year of the two-year grant which spans October 1, 2014-September 30, 2016. AWARE focuses on the remaining secondary schools in the district during the second year of the grant. CLIMATE focuses on five schools beginning in year one with an additional five schools being added each year through year four. All 25 schools will be supported in year five. Climate spans from October 1, 2014-September 30, 2019. Professional/Staff Development: The professional development provided through these three grants focuses on training site-based mental health staff (school counselors, social workers, and psychologists), administrators, teachers, health services personnel, and parents, as well as other key stakeholders within the district and community. Training focuses on building awareness and improving the delivery of support to meet students’ mental health and behavioral needs by providing appropriate resources to the students and their families. Transferability: As these three grants build upon existing systems and supports within the district, outcomes will result in the district’s capacity to improve student service delivery well beyond the life of these grants. The projects are designed to be replicable throughout the district and to positively impact school climate, culture, student behavior, and the overall academic success of students. As a recipient of all three Now Is The Time grants, the district is uniquely positioned to share its success nationwide. Involvement: The grant supervisors and coordinators work with the school sites to successfully promote the goals of the grants and ensure that the programs are supported and implemented with fidelity. |
