SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Purchase of State Adopted Instructional Materials, Science Fusion, from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) for Gap Year 2017/2018 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On May 3, 2011, the Board approved the six-year state adoption of Science Fusion published by Holt McDougal/HMH.  These instructional materials were adopted for middle school science courses, M/J Comp Science 1-3. The materials are both a consumable print and digital product and were purchased for six years, paid through 2016/2017.  The state has revised the adoption schedule by extending the next science adoption by one year.  Therefore, all Florida districts using state adopted science instructional materials that are consumable print and/or digital will need to pay for the additional gap year, 2017/2018.

HMH is offering a 20 percent savings to districts that purchase these materials by January 8, 2016.  HMH has agreed to ship the materials to the Florida School Book Depository where the materials will be held until the district requests delivery to schools for the 2017/2018 school year.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
Funds in the amount of $740,325.86 will be available in the Instructional Materials categorical budget. For tracking purposes, the project number specific to this agenda item is 4509. As of Thursday, November 19, 2015, the remaining balance less encumbrances for this line item equaled $14,058,965.55. Additional materials will be purchased if enrollment increases for these courses.
EVALUATION
Since the adoption in 2011, these materials have successfully helped students meet the course standards for middle school science. The district will continue to implement these state adopted materials until the next scheduled science adoption beginning with the 2018/2019 school year.
